What is a true multilevel class?
AYM pedagogy defines a multi-level class as a community meeting ground where many levels of practitioners congregate. In these classes, students with similar technical abilities are encouraged to work together. These groupings are there to maintain a certain level of appropriate practice to ensure safety, fun, skill and knowledge advancement, organized progress and human reciprocity. These groupings also ensure that those with more experience are not put in the teaching role. Although we are all up for the teaching and the learning, getting in where you fit in is the best way to fly!

Relaxed with Pep
These are students who have less exposure to the AcroYoga practice and are at the beginning of their journey. This group will receive progressions that are challenging but not oppressive so they can experience success and tap into their inner strength. Although these students might be new to AcroYoga, the experience they bring from other physical modalities enhances the practice and is priceless. This group also welcomes those recovering from injury, those seeking to shore up the fundamentals and those interested in the laid back scenic route.

Horizon Riders
Students with some experience in the practice. These folks are beginning to sharpen their proprioception (track the body's position, movement, and effort in space without visual input). They are familiar with the vocabulary of the practice and are aware of their niche expertise (i.e., fundamental stacking poses – dynamic movements, washing machines etc..) These practitioners are beginning to take what they have learnt and are keeping it fresh with their personal interpretation. Up for a challenge, looking for new adventures, working on being a hybrid (understanding the roles of a base and a flyer).

Movers and shakers
Students who understand and embody the finer details of the practice. Able to embrace the freedom of stillness in motion. The role of the breath, verbal & non verbal communication. Aware of the interconnectedness of the roles. You know the ropes yet worship the fundamentals which are the heartbeat of your practice.  At this level you might be specialized as a base, flyer, or prefer to be a hybrid.

At an AYM multilevel event, we have lessened the concern about level by formatting our classes into same level groups. This allows the student to get in where they fit in. We are aware that knowledge level varies from skill to skill, so theses groupings are fluid and can be adjusted depending on the skill that’s being shared.

Long live AcroYoga in all its forms and expressions!
